ImgFunction Optimized Example Page
About Optimized Image Page
On this page we have taken the Sized page photographs and optimized them reducing each photos file size considerably without compromising the quality of the image.
When we originally made this optimized page, we used the TinyJPG online compression tool as it is one of the more established and recognised tools available. Initially we were really happy with our newly optimized photos as they were greatly reduced, which not only created a lighter faster webpage it also helped improve our Google Lighthouse testing score.
Though further testing with GTmetrix and WebPageTest told us that our jpg images still had room for further optimizing. We have quickly come to realise that not all online compression tools give the same optimization and resulting file sizes, which makes testing important.
You can still see the Tiny optimized page results here.
Optimized Image Method
So this is our optimized page mark II. This time we used the online tool by CompressImage.io as unlike tiny they give you the ability to choose and adjust your images quality percentage before compressing, this then helps produce a smaller file without any noticeable (to the naked eye) reduction of the image's quality.
For a visual demonstration of this check out our Picture page.
All compression tools optimize images by firstly analysing the image, then minimizing and stripping any unnecessary data within the image file, greatly reducing the file size while not compromising the picture quality.
Like most online tools Compress.io is really simple to use just go to CompressImage.io then drag and drop your chosen .jpeg(s) into the box, you can then either let it just do its magic and optimize your jpg with the preset of 70% image quality. Or you can use the menu just above the drop box and choose your desired image quality percentage then click the recompress button below. Whichever option you choose you will almost instantly have a new smaller file to download! Please note the percentage in size reduction will differ with each image.
For example, we saw the cropped Minster photo went from 1.49mb to just 142kb when resized. Now after optimizing it is only 30.6kb, that's over 70% reduction in size!
